Babatope Akinyemi is an emerging scientist in the field Agricultural and Resource Economics. He is committed to environmental improvement, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial economic research and policy engagement. He is currently working with the University of Fort Hare, South Africa.
Babatope’s interest in the environment and nature stemmed from his childhood experience while growing up as a village boy. He spent the first two decades of his life in a remote rural village in Nigeria where he derived his livelihood from smallholder farming and Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) extraction to supplement his family meager income. The benefits he derived from nature informed his decisions to pursue higher degrees in Agricultural and Resource Economics.

He had his Bachelor degree in Agricultural Economics and Extension from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Master degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan and a PhD degree in Agricultural Economics from University of Fort Hare, South Africa. He worked as an Agronomic Technician on USAID Maximizing Agricultural Revenue and Key Enterprise in Target Sites (MARKETS I) between 2009 and 2011. He also participated in Word Bank FADAMA Mid Term Survey in 2009.
During his PhD degree and post-doctoral fellowship, he honed an ability to design and implement environmental economic research and coordinate projects. He has growing publications in peer-reviewed learned journals and research collaborations in Africa, Europe and Australia. His most recent contribution to nature conservation is the forthcoming climate change mitigation and adaptation benefits of wilder rangelands workshop that he will be co-organizing with Swedish colleagues in May 2021 in Umeå, Sweden.
